Status Update (3)
This is my third status update. I have had some problems trying to get all of the band together to take the photos of the magazine because they are either away or have jobs and struggle to find time off. However, I have resolved this problem by getting them to arrange a time that they can all get together so I can take the photos. Overall, I think that it is going well as long as I keep on top of work.

Photos from the Photo Shoots

These are all of the images that i had taken for my magazine. Some of them I used and some of them I didn't for certain reasons. Those reasons were it was either too blurry, the band were in mid conversation or they were sneezing or coughing, all effecting the photo quality. The ones I did use were mainly the ones when they were performing at a gig that I went to. This was because it looked more natural, getting them performing but also I used other photos on the second photo shoot because they were also natural which made it look good and also grungy.

Location Scout
This is the location that I chose to use for my magazine photos. This location is the Civic Centre in Sunderland City Centre. I chose this location because it was out of the way of oncoming traffic and also there wasn't many people walking past that would have disrupted the photo shoot. I also chose this location because it looks very effective for the band's genre, being grunge/rock, and it added to that feeling.
Feedback for College Magazine
This is my feedback from my class for my College magazine. I read through it and i realized that I need more text on it because it is quite plain and it is not very interesting with just pictures. Also i need to make the mast head bolder so it is clearly seen at it is the first thing that the reader sees. Also, from the feedback, I've been told that it is a bit too basic so I need to add more to it to make it eye catching and interesting to read.
I will take this feedback on board for when i create my actual music magazine.
Mood Board For My Music Magazine Contents Page
This is a mood board for my music magazine contents page. The contents page is similar to the front cover because it has one dominant image but there is a difference because it has sub images to accompany it. The images usually have the band or artist with their instrument that they play, so this gives me an idea for what I should put on my contents page. However, on some of the magazine contents pages, such as, MOJO magazine, their is one dominant image and that's it, there is no sub images, which gives it a simplistic look and this is also effective because you can see everything and it is not too 'in your face.'
I will use these ideas for my magazine but making the contents page messy but not as messy as Kerrang! magazine so i will merge both magazine contents pages together to create an effective and almost tidy contacts page so it is easier to read.

Mood Board For DPS Music Magazine
This is a mood board for my Double Page Spread for my music magazine. I have noticed that they Double Page Spreads for rock/grunge magazine have a big dominant image and then the interview or article below or at the side, accompanying the image. The DPS usually has a big, bold and bright title/main cover line which grabs your attention straight away. The DPS has one main colour and then a bright colour to go with it. This gives me some ideas for what to put on my DPS and how to set it out and also what style the band should have when taking the photos.
Mood Board For Magazine Front Cover
This is a mood board for my magazine front cover. I am doing a rock/grunge magazine and i have noticed that the rock/grunge bands and magazines all have a messy front cover and there is a lot going on on the front cover. It mainly has dark colours with a small bit of colour. You have a dominant image of the band or artist; their facial expression is mainly a serious, dark expression and they are using direct mode of address to connect with the audience. The other facial expression used is a big expressive face and they are either jumping in the air or screaming at the camera.
I will put that in mind for my front page of my magazine to make it look as effective as possible.

Status Update
This is an update on how things are going so far. My magazine has been coming along very well, but I have had a few stressful moments because I have been behind on work and trying to get everything done in a short period of time. However, I have now caught up with all of the work and everything is running smoothly.

Font Ideas

I chose these fonts for my music magazine because they are a grunge style font, which is the style of music that my magazines going to be based on. I think that these font designs would be very effective because they stand out and they are bold and in capital letters so it is the first thing the reader sees. Real Gone is he name of the band that i am basing my magazine on, I haven't decided on a name for my magazine yet.
These fonts show the reader, immediately, what genre of music the magazine is for and what may be in the magazine. I'm going to use for my magazine the font Scratched Letters for the Masthead and Subway Novella for the cover line because they look really grungey and they would work well on a rock/grunge magazine.
Institution Research
This is my institution research for my magazine. I think that both companies would be good for my magazine because each of them made a magazine that my own magazine is based on. I think that the International Publishing Company (IPC) would be good to publish my magazine because they made NME magazine and they send their magazines to almost every magazine shop, which is good for my magazine to get recognised because it will be published to a wide variety of people.
The 'Recce'
1.
Are there any potential hazards that
could pose a health and safety risk where your photo shoot will take place
(trailing cables/traffic/other objects)
On
coming traffic is a potential hazard because the wall that I want the photos to
be taken is just outside of the band’s rehearsal building. Also, inside their rehearsal building, I want
to take photos of them rehearsing and there is a lot of wires and cables lying
on the floor. Also, all of their
equipment is in the room too and could be a potential hazard.
2.
What will you do to ensure these risks
are minimised?
I
will make sure that we are nowhere near the on coming traffic so none of use
get hurt and that we are safe. Also I
will move any loose cables to the side of the room so we don’t trip over them
and if the band are using the cables and leads then I will ensure that they are
away from us so we don’t injure our selves.
Also, the band’ equipment will be out and we will ensure that nothing
gets damaged.
3.
Will the time of day/weather affect the
outcome of the photos? Have you allowed for this?
The
time of day may affect it because we will only have the building for a few
hours so I need to make sure that all of the photos are taken before we have to
leave. Also the weather may affect the
photos being taken because I will be taking some of them outside but it may add
to the atmosphere of the band as long as I have the camera well protected.
4.
Have you considered the background to
your photos, particularly if taken outside? How will you ensure you will get
the background you want?
I
will ensure that I get the background that I want because I want the background
of some of the photos to be a brick wall behind the band. The is a brick wall outside of the band’s
rehearsal building so I will be able to use that.
5.
Have you considered lighting? What
about the ‘problems’ of natural lighting, either outside, or streaming through
a window? Will you need to use a flash? Have you considered reflective objects
that might spoil the effect?
I
have considered this and I wont have a problem with the natural lighting
outside because it will add to the band’s style and also for the photos inside
of the building, I will be using a flash for some of the photos and not for the
others. This is because I want to see
which looks better for the band.
6.
Do you need permission to take photos
in the place/venue you have in mind?
I will have to
ask permission from the band if it would be okay for me to go down to where
they rehearse to take the photos because there will be other bands and artists
rehearing there and I want to make sure that it is fine for me to take them.
7.
Are other people/crowds likely to be an
issue for you? What have you done to ensure that it will not spoil the effect?
Other people
will be in the rehearsal building that the band use and it may affect it
because they will want to rehearse as well and also outside, there will be
people walking past but none of this will spoil the effect because I will make
sure that there is enough time for others to rehearse and also that there is
enough room for people to walking past behind me so they are not in the shot of
the band.
8.
Are you reliant on lifts/props/friends’
equipment/models? How have you planned that these things will come together at
the appointed time? Plan B?
I will be
using props, such as, the band’s instruments in the shots because it will show
what the band are about and what they do, also I may struggle to get the band
on the time that I want them so I will ask them, in advance, what day and times
that would be best for them to get together for me to take the photos.
9.
Finally, have you thought of every
eventuality…?
Yes, I will be
prepared for anything that may happen while taking the photos because it will
be in a safe environment and also I will have asked the band in advance if they
are free.
Photo Shoot Planning
Media Production
Photo shoot planning document
What emotional impact do you want your
photography to have upon the reader? How?
I want the reader to feel that they can
connect with the band because I want the band to be looking at the camera
(direct mode of address) so the reader can relate and maybe understand the
band. I want the reader to feel what
sort of music it is that they play by using their instruments in the shots.
What personnel do you need? Who are you
going to photograph?
I am going to photograph the whole band
together because they all make the music, not just one of them, so I want all
of them to be in the photos and to show the reader who they all are as a band.
What props will you need?
I will need their instruments in the shots so
the reader know what the band is about and who they are before they have read
about them in the double page spread. I
also think that it would add to the style and personality of the band.
How are you going to emphasise colour?
I will emphasise the colour by using
natural lighting for the outside shots and also the flash on the camera for the
shots inside the building.
Have you briefed your personnel/models?
I have told them what I want them to do and
where I will be taking the photos so there is no confusion when it comes to
taking the photos.
What lighting will you need? Any other
equipment?
I won’t need any other lighting sources
because I want it to be simple and not to complicated so it adds to the vibe of
the band because having just one light source will add to the atmosphere of the
band, being grunge and rock.
Where will you shoot? Will you need a
backdrop?
I will be using the wall outside of their
rehearsal building and also their rehearsal room inside of the building and maybe
a simple, one coloured wall inside of the building.
Make-up? Costume?
For the band’s
costume/clothing I just want them to wear their normal, everyday clothing to
show how laid back they are and also to add to their grunge style. Also, because they are a rock band, it would
look more effective if they just dressed the way they do normally or their
rehearsals.

Facial Expression Research (Millum)
This is a Prezi that I made for my Facial Expression Research on Trevor Millum.
In my product, I will be using the Practical facial expression but without the direct mode of address because of my style of magazine, I want my models to look moody and relaxed to create the Alternative/Grunge feel.
Facial Expression Research (Ferguson)
This is a Prezi that I made for my Facial Expression Research on Margorie Ferguson.
Local Band Conversation
This is the conversation between me and the lead singer/ local band ,that I am using for my magazine, confirming that they would gladly be the models for my magazine.
Feedback for Photoshop Practice

This is the feedback from my Photoshop practice. Looking at the feedback, i have taken on board that i have to make my dominant image bigger so it is central and also I may need to add some sub images to fill the background to make it stand up more. I also need to have more information on the front cover but they also need to be clearer so they stand out to the reader and so it grabs their attention. i have also taken on board that i need to do a bit more editing on the image to make it look better and so it is more dominant and the first thing people see as well as the masthead.
I will take this feedback on board for when i create my music magazine and I also need to improve my photoshop skills.

Reader Profile (My Magazine)
This is my reader profile for my own magazine. I found out from my surveys that most of them like Rock/Indie music and like to eat in restaurants, such as, Subway and McDonalds. i will incorperate my findings into my magazine so that i can attract more of an audience for my magazine.

Prop Ideas
Follow Megan's board prop ideas on Pinterest.
These are the prop ideas that I have for my music magazine. I was thinking about what I wanted on the front cover of the magazine and I thought about, because they are a band, that I should have them with their instruments. This will show the reader that they are real band; it will also add to the grunge style that I'm going for in the magazine. I think that this will make my magazine more eye catching for the reader because they get to know about the band before they have even read about them. I also think that this will add more of an effect to the band to show the reader what they are about.

Competitors post
When creating my magazine, I have to think about other magazines that I would be competing against if my magazine was published. I would be competing against magazines, such as, Kerrang magazine because they advertise to a teenage audience and the music that is advertised in their magazine is Rock and Grunge and Indie which is the same as mine. To make my magazine stand out over Kerrang magazine, I will make my magazine more vibrant on the front cover because Kerrang's is quite dark and I want to appeal to a big audience.
Another magazine that I would be competing against is Q magazine. I would be competing against this magazine because they advertise to a wider audience than Kerrang and I am planning on doing that in my magazine so I can appeal to a wider audience. Q magazine advertises to an audience that like different styles of music so they put that in their magazine to gain more readers. To stand out over Q magazine, I'm going to incorporate different types of music and also different advertisements for clothing shops too, so I can publish my magazine to a bigger audience.
